Do Girls lead themselves?
Re: Do Girls lead themselves?
i add another post to this thread to reiterate a point .. u cant deny , men are from mars etcetc , so I think the instructions for guys needs to be different in principle to the ones to girls , ie they should be taught how to lead and the girls how to follow.. this should ideally be level 1 , taugh separately . Then in level 2 the combos should be refined. I would like it if there were female instructors or experienced girls coming to our centre so that they could guide our leads.. Sangeeta did make one appearance at our class, but all she said was . u r wrong

Do girls lead themselves
I think it is nervousness, girls are so intent on remembering what to do next they just do the steps like automatons, they dont mean to lead or anything consciously. Like Jigar always tells me, just relax in your head, the moves will come.

Re: Do Girls lead themselves?
There is another reason why I would lead at times....
A lot of guys just dont get their timing right...their 1 starts on 2...sometimes even 3.... sometimes they take too long to complete the last bar, therefore the current bar (and therefore the subsequent ones) would be totally lost
so to avoid screwing up the rest of the time I'd be dancing with the person, its easier to just make the move myself to save the day...

Re: Do Girls lead themselves?
Yes it is veryyyyy confusing to dance when the timing gets messed up...coz you don't know whether you should stick to the timing (which causes you to lead yourself) or you should follow the lead (which becomes hard if you are concentrating on the beat of the music).
I don't think there is any solution to this...except that we just HAVE to learn to dance on time.

Re: Do Girls lead themselves?
Ya for sure girls lead themself at Quickstep, and its not always about practise. We girls r always in hurry and then when we r at the classes we want to learn our moves and then rush out...thats a very bad thing what we r doing. we have removed time to come for classes but are not having patients to take a chill pill and go slow. and also one thing runs in our mind that we have to keeping shifting, from one partner to another. so we try to hurry up, if not with others I sometimes do that
We have to bring in loads of patients when we r in classroom or when we r dancing with the partner and thats wherein we wornt take that extra step without being lead.

In class - YES. Girls lead themselves
Might be cos we are being taught at the same time and the girls know what exactly we are doing....

do they or dont they - hardly matters
What matters always i think is the visual effect of flow and elan. The grace the two bring together. the classical school and purists insist that the men lead and girls follow - for natural reasons being a man wont contest that

Re: Do Girls lead themselves?
This may be a problem in class because you are learning one particular combination.....that is WHY you should attend salsa nights at RIO lounge on Sundays....coz in a club, the girl has no choice but to follow the lead as she doesn't know what the guy is going to lead her for next....i'm sure you will all agree with me.

Re: Do Girls lead themselves?
i have great fun in NOT following the standard format of the combo while leading towards the end of the class , just to see if the girl is just following by rote , or actually getting lead by the man.. the reactions are varied ... the good ones , like the BMW's (lol) enjoy .. some get confused and stop ... and some admonish me ... thinking that im a thicko ... and some follow perfectly , but have a quizzical look on their face ..
But id say a majority do tend to be on 'auto pilot' and dont wait for the lead ... many not willing to wait for the 'slow' step (ie counts 4 and

Re: Do Girls lead themselves?
I observed some girls.... (who r experienced salsa dancers) they just wait for the man to lead..... even when the know the step what we are doing. I think thats the correct way to react.
Earlier i used to wonder all of them are in level 3 or 2 but still why the hell they r so blank..... then i realised its my dumbness that is making them so blank.....

Re: Do Girls lead themselves?
Several beginner guys have asked me if i'm always that 'still' or 'stiff'...well what is a girl to do if she is not getting any lead???? I have noticed that some guys just stand and wait for the girls to lead themselves...so it's not only the girls leading themselves that is the problem....it's the guys expecting the girls to lead themselves that is also the problem. So guys don't be lazy on the dance floor...put your groove on and move your hands and legs a little more
