Do Girls lead themselves?
Do girls lead themselves?
yeah, we tend to when dancing with guys from Quickstep as we kinda anticipate the moves.

Re: Do Girls lead themselves?
I think there are to two things that happen...one, as someone rightly has already said that tend to anticipate the moves to the next bar.....two, I may be wrong, but I have noticed that some ladies are very stiff at the elbow and the shoulders; as a result they try to get into a comfort zone by preempting the lead...maybe some relaxation might help !

Re: Do Girls lead themselves?
happens quite often as beginners ..
we dont get the lead ... initially we think and dance .. takes a while probably to process wad the lead is for and then a while to do the move .. by then we've gone to the next bar !!
will require practice so as to get accustomed to d leads

dear moderators,
kingshuk our brother said that he made a post and it was deleted though there was nothing objectionable about it..
though the moderators have the right to do so, my suggestion to them would be to maybe try modifying posts for marginally objectionable content. if it is hugely objectionable then maybe it qualifies for deletion. maybe they can private message the poster as to why his/her post was deleted. it may help more people unaware of the way a democratic forum works

Well, In last class you yourself have given solution to this right, you have decided to stop dance, till the guys lead,
This will really help,
" It is law of nature, men wake up, when things taken up for granted are not granted".
Level 2 member, Sangeetha really does this. she just stops like solid rock and does not move till the proper lead is given to her.

Re: Do Girls lead themselves?
i think that quite some girls lead themselves...either anticipating or they are afraid that they'll look bad if their partner forgets or any such reason...also i think some girls are pretty stiff while dancing and it becomes really hard to lead them to your comforts or try any styling .. hence guys (including me of course) don't know whether their leads are actually good enough for the dance floor!

Re: Do Girls lead themselves?
yes, many girls lead themselves. once i got an injury while a girl was leading me when i was doing reverse turn and she was doing cbl turn....

Re: Do Girls lead themselves?
To some extent i also blame the guys.....most of us execute the moves like an assembly line function- start to finish in a monotonous manner....once the girl gets a hint as to what you are doing she will end up making it easier for herself......the idea is to keep the girl guessin.......
every move will have moments where one can slow down or speed up, take time to think what you want to do next...it will give the girl also a breather.....
mix n match moves...start off with one, end it with another....will help the guys figure out combinations at the speed of thought n will let the girls know how well do they follow
use ur basics more....rarely have i seen people do their basic footwork for more than a single bar, use the spot turns (esp men), or do the open break to kill the monotony..........

Re: Do Girls lead themselves?
If you ask me the difference between copa push pull or all around you or any other combination...i will not know it...i prefer not to remember the sequence of steps in combinations...this prevents me from leading myself because i don't know what is coming up next...well that is the trick I use

Re: Do Girls lead themselves?
well , the girls do go on auto-pilot ... anand lectured us about that for 20 mins today! partially , i guess its because we practise the same move throughout the class. I guess if we understood principles , then this situation wouldnt arise. Even if the girls dont lead , they keep their arms too stiff to be lead. Today I found i could lead only 2 girls of the 15 odd attending , I purposely 'forgot' the sequence to find out.
One way out would be to have 'free style' practise at end of each session .
But one thing I seriously feel is that ther should be different classes or instructions for the guys and the gals , as the concept are different ... I dont know how far this is practical.. that could be another topic of discussion.

ya even i think that we should have freestyle practice once in a while....that way you can try different combinations at once rather than just 1 combination a day

Re: Do Girls lead themselves?
It is very natural for a beginning (or sometimes even intermediate) follower to anticipate. What happens is they are afraid they will not catch a lead in time to execute the move, so they try to anticipate and thereby end up competing for the lead. They of course should not be doing this, but it is very natural nonetheless. Beginners are often stiff as well because they are nervous - and this applies to both leaders and followers. I find that both of these issues work themselves out with time and practice.
A couple of things for the guys... First, someone had mentioned that they can't be sure if they are leading correctly because they don't know if the follower is anticipating or is sensing some confusion in the lead. This issue is why it is so important to dance with many different people. Everyone follows differently, and by leading more followers you will begin to sense if most followers are having the same issue with your lead or if some of them are just anticipating. Second, instead of becoming frustrated with followers that anticipate, see it as an opportunity to refine your lead and to really communicate with your partner. Don't be afraid to try the same move again even if they didn't get it the first time. Not only are you taking responsibility for your lead and making it as smooth as possible, you are also showing the follower that you are patient and that you trust that they will be able to work through their tendency to anticipate and be nervous. Beginners especially need that reassurance that they are being allowed to work through the learning process and that they won't be looked down on.
I see this a lot in my beginner classes and have experienced some of it myself way back when I first started learning. Trust and respect always go such a long way. After all, it is about having a conversation with your partner and not just about making sure you can do your moves. Enjoy!

Re: Do Girls lead themselves?
Joy, You're spot on! I think it's also important for a leader to gauge the follower's sensitivity to leads. Sometimes light touches are all one needs to lead, while for a different follower, the leads may need to be very firm. With an unfamiliar partner, therefore, one should therefore start with a couple of basic cbl's / cbt's and some simple moves to calibrate leads before going on to sophisticated moves.
