Salsa and Kathak
Hi Tanny dont understand your phoren message but it sounds very sexy:-) Anyway my intelligent rejoinder is that Salsa does remind me in some ways of Kathak, remember that classmate of ours who is a Kathak dancer and does all those lovels turns. May be we can have indo salsa fusion kind of thing. Anyway like Chinese food in India is so popular and has developed its own flavour, Salsa in India may also develop its own characreristics, so like we say in NY they dance on the two and LA they dance on the one (I am sure Anand sir will say we all dance on the NONE!)we can say perhaps we have our own style. I think Bollywood version must already be there. Anand sir are you a purist or you think dances evolve and change?

Re: Bachata and Rhumba
in my dictionary purist = stuck-up...
the reason i chose salsa over the many other styles that i used to teach is because of its bandwidth to accept improvisation.. so yes we are totally allowed to improvise on that..
my only issue is with fly-by-night operations who try to sell the art without knowing anything about it, and act like professionals and the only reason for their "improvisations" is the lack of core knowledge..
always willing to help

Translation of Tenny's Message
Hi!!!
The post submitted by Tenny is in Espanol so here's the translation:
"Worship Bachata because it is simple and sensual. It has better songs with lonely kiss. Taste of Guitar."
I think Tenny that my Translation is correct because I am a new Spanish learner.

Anand,
Would love it if you'd conduct workshops on Bachata and Rhumba from time to time. Im sure there are many bachata lovers right here on this forum. Ashishsax will agree on this one.

Go for it, people! Is good fun (also a good break from the hectic-ness of salsa). :-)

Re: Bachata and Rhumba
Hi Anand,
Is it possible to do bachata with anyone and everyone? The reason why I am asking this is because I think it is a very intimate form of dance, as compared to salsa....and hence a girl wouldnt be comfortable dancing with any guy...
Do let me know your views

Re: Bachata and Rhumba
unfortunately tina, what u say is true..
and even more unfortunately true, my experience and feeling is that many dancers dance bachata for the wrong reasons.. though bachata can be very intimate, the onus is one the girl to draw the line..if u like the dance but are dancing with someone you are not that comfortable, then you can communicate the distance you wanna maintain.. you can be firm if the message doesnt go across or even decline the dance mid-way..
do not ever let anyone ruin the pleasure you get from dancing..and at the same time do not deprive yourself of a particular dance form..you just decide what works for you and what doesnt.. ..maybe start of with a trusty partner..
regards

On the flip side Tina, it is easy to discourage the guy if he gets too, um, close for comfort as you Bachata -- very effectively, and you can do it in time with the music!

Hi Anand,
I guess it is best to stick to salsa then.....
Btw, where did Bachata originate from? And how popular is it in India?

Bachata
Hi Tina,
Bachata is very sensual and has to be danced close to look good. Yes, it is an intimate dance and your bodies have to sync, so a certain comfort level is required. The guitar is the main instrument and is very romantic.
Well, do give it a try.. learning bachata is fun

Tina
Tina: Dominican Republic, if I am not mistaken. And so says the relatively trusty wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bachata
It has really shot into prominence in the last three years, I think. Remember a time when at salsa places, you had only salsa and merengue. Then one fine day there was this track from Aventura, but just one or two couples on the floor, which was quite nice. And now, things have certainly changed all over the world. Heck, it has changed so much that the original beauty of that dance -- it was simple and romantic and rustic -- has been spoilt, I would say. If you look around, even on youtube, you will see it has been salsa-ised -- with people introducing quite complicated turn patterns (borrowed from salsa) etc etc. They even have a Bachata wheel now, would you believe it? :-)

Re: Bachata and Rhumba
Tina,
You can read a short introductory article on bachata here. There's also a link at the bottom where you can listen to samples of bachata music.
Very interesting to hear the connotations associated with bachata in India. Here it is considered the "slow dance" and is welcomed after fast and furious salsas and merengues. It is of course a very romantic and sensual dance, but it can be danced very open or closer depending on your comfort level and your partner. A very beautiful dance though - one of my favorites. As an instructor I find that this dance tends to be an acquired taste because it does not have the immediate "flashy" appeal that salsa and merengue do with all the turns, nor is the music as easily accessible. But definitely worth the investment to learn more about the dance and the music.

Have come across Bachata being fused with tango. Where did this style originate and what would be the technique?

I recently went for a salsa night that turned out to be more bachata than salsa. And I got a see exactly what Karin has described here.... a very simple and sensuous dance... most people were just doing the bachata basic step stylizing it differently every 2 bars or so, nothing too fancy or salsa-ish done at all.....some people were dancing extremely closely and then there were those who were not, and it looked quite good as well.
Im sure we can atleast give it a try??

Anand , I feel you must offer us a course in this too , maybe just an hours special workshop. You could restrict it to only partners for intimacy issues and to keep the balance . Its a lovely dance!

Re: Bachata and Rhumba
Hi Samir,
I think its a good idea....If we dont try it, we wouldnt know whats it all about...Maybe the intimacy hold could be the way we have in salsa....so that it doesnt get uncomfortable...
Anand, can we have a workshop on bachata?
