Its been a while now maybe some 2-3 years back when we used to learn ballroom in bandra class , at the time of dancing on the music anand used to switch off all the lights and put on these cool dim lamp shades… The whole feeling of dancing in dim light used to be so awesome!!

And almost everyday in the class we students used to get Cadbury Gems treat from him…!!

Do you still do that anand?

yes dats a guitar only.. and i only know how to play bass guitar
dont know any place in mumbai cos i'm from delhi.. ashwini will be able to guide you
as she herself is learning guitar..

I rem one incident...
this was when jiggar was instructing our class..
He asked all of us to face the wall...we all did as instructed....there was this girl...who walked to the wall instead and stood with her back to the wall..it was not like she didnt hear him..i think it was the case of perception...but i did find it kinda funny...

I wrote it coz ppl wouldve forgotten the incident by now and no one will be discomfited by my mentioning it..


now we have anand instructing us...so we have fun all the time......wheeeeeeee...(not that jiggy's class was any less fun...)

i hate the music uve been playing for the last 2 classes.... i realise it is a simpler beat pattern for people to follow , but it sounds like someones playing a standard rhythm on a Cassio! and I feel im doing PT exercises. If one doesnt 'feel' the music , one isnt dancing , and the moves just become moves , and not a dance.
Of course I may be in the minority , but thats my opinion.

in fact you could be the majority and me the sole minority

but this minority is gonna make sure the music is gonna stay that way till everyone starts paying attention to the music, collects salsa songs, "listens" (not enjoys) them, practices to them and is prepared to handle them..

3 of the 6 CDs in my car stereo is Salsa so its salsa most of the time when im driving...in fact i almost banged the car when mentally salsa-ing! But agree that getting the rhythm is the ultimate foundation to learning the dance and commend you for ur persistence

Anand has a collection of the most happening music from all round the world...
I guess he has almost a cupboard full of them...
As anand rightly said that everyone has to start paying attention to the music, collect salsa songs, listen to them, practice them and be prepared to handle them..
And doc as you said that the music is boring simple beat pattern to follow but very slow..
As we know the fabulous flexiblities that quickstep gives all of us, in a class we have students at different level.. Even in a level 1 class we have beginner, absolute beginner etc...
Am sure as an absolute beginner when you started if anand started off with music that is really cool and hip but with difficult complex pattern to understand you would be lost..
And anand is the maestro.. Trust me he knows best as to what music to play, when to play which is best for the class..
Many a time even a level 2 or level 3 student fails to understand simple music.. So our foundation has to be rock solid... Thats what we get to learn from him...
And you can always keep practising as we guys are so previleged that even after stipulated 16 lesson class anand allows us to keep coming.. So make the most of it!!

yes i do have a few cds lying here and there .. but always helps to gain from what others have .. some of my students have often given some fabulous collections.. i respect them for that.. i am a hoarder.. i love to collect and never say no to anything

the music im playing in class is truly very boring.. its just one track with a simple clave, tumbao, conga and cowbell sort of beat sometime.. its boring but more effective i feel.. am preparing a special timing CD.. how can i deliver your copy to you ?

Wow anand.. a special timing cd would really be of great help for the students..
Everyone should definitely take advantage of it..
I surely would like to take that..

the timing CD concept is awesome..m eagerly awaiting my copy in class..truly the music u play in class these days is very boring...and no fun at all...but i like the class of spot turns.. ...likewise could you take one on proper leading and following?? i think that would help a lot...

Anand shared a very important piece of information this time ... as to why his classes are unstructured in terms of batches , ie why the groups are so mixed..
This was so that dancers of various seniority are present each time so that your partners can be of various experience. In my previous class where we all joined together it was like the blind leading the blind.
So ppl get to dance with more experienced dancers , thats an advantage 4 sure ... but what about having to dance with LESS experienced ones?
Actually thats important too... In our surgical training whenever we learn a new operation we r told " see one 'do one teach one" this means the learning process is complete when we teach the operation to a junior.
The same holds true in dance.. I find now that im a bit 'senior' I try to help the less experienced girls , and this makes me better and more confident . Also more considerate.. at the same time more experienced dancers like Sangeeta and BEauty join in , and tick me off from time to time.
IT ALL MAKES SENSE NOW , ANAND U R A GENIUS

N i will miss all this for 2 weeks, i.e 4 classes ...sob sob
