Argentine Tango Communities in India?
In reading the "Shakira" post, there don't seem to be many Argentine tango enthusiasts (or at least active tango dancers) out in the forum. I just returned from Tangofest in Portland, Oregon, USA. I have been studying tango for several years and am planning a trip to Buenos Aires, Argentina, in the next year. If anyone is interested in discussing this dance, I'm definitely up for it!

Re: Argentine Tango Communities in India?
Hi Karin,
Hyderabad City in India, is not that developed for Latin style of dances, but recently I saw one man from Hyderabad city teaching Tango, his teaching style was weired, it was just like he was choreographing Tango steps, The counts which he was counting was (walks) Quick Quick Slow Slow, Quick Quick Slow Slow then a Dip and then a Spin, then a twist twist(lower body movement ), so the entire thing looked v.funny, coz the males back was facing us so the walks were looking horrible. so now I have become keen to know about this style also, do u have any video links wherein I can see a basic Tango dance, and also plz let me know were this guys counting right for Tango steps??
Thanks for ur previous reply it was v.informative

Re: Argentine Tango Communities in India?
Kai,
I'm not sure if perhaps what you are describing might be ballroom tango, but Argentine tango does not have a particular rhythm to follow. It is very improvisational in nature and the rhythm can be used however you like, leaving room for a great deal of creativity but also making it more challenging to learn. Quick quick slow is one pattern that can be used in Argentine tango, but they do not have to be used at any specific time. It is completely up to the leader (and, to some extent, the follower) to choose to interpret the music in this way. So the basic steps in Argentine tango are simply walking steps and can be used in any combination imaginable in terms of rhythm, direction, etc.
There is an eight-count basic that some Argentine tango instructors use as a structure to aid in learning. But this is only a tool for learning; once you become comfortable, this eight-count basic becomes obsolete because it is the music and your own creativity that determine how you interpret the music and the steps. This is why Argentine tango is so difficult to describe to someone; you just have to watch it and experience it for yourself. In this respect, it is very different from salsa or any other Latin dance where there is a specific rhythm and basic step to follow.
So I am not sure what you were watching, but I can tell you that when you see real Argentine tango, you will find it nothing less than beautiful, creative, and alluring.
Here is one clip of Argentine tango. I will try to find some more good examples this week and post them on this thread as well.
