Clave Empty Clave

It was mentioned in class so I looked it up. It is both the rhythm pattern and the name of the instrument. It is pronounced mostly as clavay and by some as clave (as in save) You can listen to a basic clave pattern on Wikipedia and see how it looks, basically just small pieces of wood. But so important in Salsa!

I agree! Clave and its importance in salsa is often overlooked, but it is one of the defining features of Latin music and is what makes it so unique and spicy! I wrote a very brief article about it (click here to read). I also recommend a book by Ned Sublette called Cuba and Its Music if you are interested in the development of salsa music and its roots in Cuba. Happy learning!
