What's your race? Is salsa just for Cubans/Hispanics?

Post  PsIloveU on Thu Nov 18, 2010 10:15 pm

To be honest, I'm not a huge fan of salsa's dancing technicality; I just like the music. I have a strong Hispanic cultural upbringing. My Dad's white - My mom, Nicaraguense. My mother was crazy about dancing in her younger days. So I got to listen to all her musical favs. Salsa was one of them. Her influence shaped my musical interests.

Here's the thing though, I really look like a white man. No one has ever correctly guessed that I'm born of Hispanic blood. So whenever I have company in my car, and I'm playing Salsa music, it's not uncommon I receive a curious question: "Do you have Spanish ancestry in you?"

I find it upsetting that quite a few people find it unusual that a seemingly fully white man is listening to Spanish music. "Maybe he's a Burrito. He's just trying to attract brown women." Is Salsa music for brown people only? So what's the racial makeup here? Is it really mostly Hispanics? And what about your community? If you're not in a Hispanic community, are you the white-salsa-dancing minority?
