puerto rican is another word for cross body style

cross body has LA (on 1) and NY (on 2)

Re: LA style Cross-Body on 1

Post  samird on Sun Oct 19, 2008 1:49 am

what we are learning is on 1
on 2 is a bit more complex in timing , where the 1 is on 5 as i remember, so that the guys first stepis back on the count of 2.
looks like on 2 is more for experienced guys , but also seems more popular. Its also called NY as opposed to LA what we r learning
anand ji correct me if im wrong

Re: LA style Cross-Body on 1

Post  Guest on Sun Oct 19, 2008 3:25 am

there is usually a fair bit of discussion about dancing on1 and on2 and why one is 'better' than the other, there's lots of articles on the net discussing this issue. as far as i know, there are at least 3 different ways of dancing on2. one is the classic mambo style which is exactly similar to the on1 style except that you dance on the 2,3,4 and 6,7,8 pausing on the 5 and 1. another way of dancing on2 is 'on the clave' where u step forward with the left foot on the 2 then step in place with the right foot on 3 subsequently stepping on 5,6,7,8 pausing on the 1 and 4. the third one is the modern on2 style also known as new york style on2 or the eddie torres style. this is the most popular way of dancing on2 and is usually what people are referring to when they talk about dancing on2. this style is similar to dancing on1 in that you dance on the 1,2,3 and 5,6,7 pausing on the 4 and 8, but the pauses occur at a different feet position. in this style, the man steps in place with his left foot on count 1, breaks back with his right foot on 2, then steps in place with his left foot on 3, pauses on 4 in that position after which he steps forward with his right foot on 5 and forward with his left foot on the 6 count, stepping back in place with the right foot on 7 and pausing on count 8 in that position.
moreover, i have also heard one can break on any count one likes to as long as they are in sync with their partner and the music. this article here shows 24 ways to dance on clave. and here's another article about dancing on2.

Hey Andy today in a super market I met one guy who is a south arfican, and he is born near by cuba.

after he introduced himself to me I realised he is staying opposite my bunglow. when I heard him telling he is from cuba, I asked him whether he knows salsa, for 3mins he just smiled then I told him, tht I have lately learnt on1 style of salsa, so he said whts tht??? I told dont joke dont tell me u dont know whats on1 style or la style,he said no he does not know, then I asked him what salsa do u know he said newyork style, so I told hiim ok on 2 style ny style .

now I want to know what does on1 stand for and what does on 2 stands for in short n in brief.
as I am aware tht on1 u start forward on 1 count, and on 2 u start off on 6 count. but plzz explain me the meaning of on1 and on2. he said he had even won the prize for salsa festival that took place in hyderabad in fusion bar few months back.
